The only record of his birth is census data which can often be wrong. Some of his descendents say he was born in Pennsylvania. One of his sons, Simon, says his father was born in Ireland and mother born in Pennsylvania. He had small children on 1800 census 2 sons 0-10, 1 dau. 0-10, wife 16-26, and he 26-45. On 1810 census he had 4 sons 0-10, 2 sons 10-16, no daus., wife 26-45, and he 45+.

Traditionally, it is thought that Andrew married Mataliana Bates. However, the 1820 Census of Wayne Co., Ohio, Sugarcreek shows there to be a Catherine Hacket M0-10 4x M10-16 1x M16-18 1x M16-26 3x F0-10 1x F26-45 1x. It is possible that this is Catherine Bates, sister to Mataliana. Living in Sugarcreek Twp. are all the daughters of Christian Bates and their families, except Matalianna. Living there are Munn, Conrad, William, Michael, Homan, and Goudy. Andrew Bates lives near Christian in Tuscarawas Twp., Stark Co., which is just across the county line. ³²

Andrew married Mataliana Bates, daughter of Christian Bates and Eve Unknown, about 1800 in Fayette Co, Pennsylvania, USA. (Mataliana Bates was born in 1780 in Pennsylvania and died before 1880.)
