bullet  General Notes:

Dodie was born August 10, 1923 in Sacramento. One of seven children, she had one brother Bud, and fine sisters, Maxine, Ella Mae (Auntie Mae), Lamar, Toni, and Elaine. Dodie met her best friend Alijeanne Butler when she was two years old. They enjoyed 81 years of friendship.

Dodie enjoyed motorcycle riding with her sister Ella Mae. Their longest journey was to Texas and back. Unlike most young women of her time, Dodie remained single until the age of 23. Some of Dodie's best memories were when she worked in her Dad's restaurant. She idolized her father who, she said, devoted his life to his children, as did she.

One afternoon while shopping with friends for a bathing suit, she met Lacy Smith whom she married on february 13, 1946. Their first child, lacy Jr., was born January 14, 1947. Then months later along came Gailan on November 24th. Needless to say, Dodie had her hands full for a couple of years. The second set of kids came March 17, 1952, David (Rocky) and on May 17, 1956, Mitchell.

Dodie was ecstatic when her first grandchild, Dean (who everyone knows was Grandma's favorite) was born, in 1969. It was another seven years before her second, Lacy III came along. Lacy loved Grandma's heavenly rice. The rest of the grandchildren came a bit quicker: Ryan in 1978, whose platinum hair color Grandma loved; Paul in 1981, with whom she spent a lot of time watching sports on TV, Dana in 1983, was her partner in arts and crafts, Katie in 1986, who loved to go shopping with Grandma, and Jeanna in 1987 who sang songs with Grandma while Uncle Mitch played the guitar. Her great-grandchildren Tyler, Julie, Alicia, Sammy and Brett were a special source of joy for her. If there was someone who would listen, Grandma was always bragging about her great-grandchildren.

And, then finally, there's Grandma's namesake, beloved Sassy, who she pampered and fretted over just as much as her grandkids, if not more.

Mom, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Auntie and friend will be sorely missed. She list up the room wherever she went. She made lifelong friends easily. A day won't go by that everyone who has known and lover her won't miss her terribly, but will have wonderful memories to cherish.
